The annual Flamingo Festival is being held across Andhra Pradesh from January 3 to January 5, which has been put on hold due to the pandemic COVID-19.

The festival is being celebrated in several parts of the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, including Sullurpeta, Athikanithippa, Nelapattu and Bevi Palem. It also rejoices in the arrival of waves of migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. It is a delight for nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers to watch the birds breed nest and feed. For decades, people from all over the world and across the country have come to Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and Pulicat Lake to watch these birds and catch food in the shallow lake water.

The festival is a site to behold as the migratory birds come from as far away as Siberia and other Himalayan highlands. Local communities also organize recreational activities to entertain tourists. The main festival venue is in Sullurpeta town where exhibition stalls feature various departments like forestry and animal husbandry.

The festival at Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary attracts the attention of visitors including school children. Apart from flamingos, the festival also sees pelicans, storks and other migratory birds as they nest on trees and perches around the wetlands and lakes.

Bird photography contests and environmental education sensitization programs are also organized for the people during the festival.
