With focus on freight, Railways invites bids for 90,000 wagons – Times of India

new Delhi: Indian Rail It has invited bids for manufacturing and procurement of 90,000 wagons with an investment of Rs 30,000 crore to meet the growing demand for wagons amid increasing focus on freight transport.
Officials said that keeping in view the expected increase in the type of freight traffic in the next two-three years, high volume and high value tenders have been floated.
For example, out of the total 90,000 wagons, 42,000 will be used to transport coal and another 40000 will be used for transportation of commodities like cement and food grains.
Another 8,000 wagons will be procured to transport goods like rail and heavy steel products.
“We have set a target to increase freight traffic to 2,024 million tonnes (MT) in 2024 and for that we need enough wagons. This will also give us more revenue and there will be more investment in railways.
The total freight traffic is expected to reach 1,400 MT during the current financial year ending March 31.
Officials said that one metric tonne of freight brings a revenue of around Rs 80-100 crore to the railways.
recently, railway Minister ashwini vaishnav had said that the performance of the railways will largely depend on how they increase freight traffic.
The finances of the railways are completely dependent on freight as it causes heavy losses in the passenger segment and the freight earnings are used as cross-subsidies for passenger services.
