Windshield of Kerala bus cracks during elephant encounter, driver kept cool

The windshield of the bus broke after touching the glass of the tusk of a wild elephant.

The encounter of a bus driver with a wild elephant in Kerala is gaining momentum on social media. The video is shot by one of the passengers on the bus and it shows the vehicle’s windshield breaking as soon as the elephant touches it.

The video of this incident that happened on Tuesday has been shared by many Twitter users including IAS officer Supriya Sahu.

“Don’t know who is the driver of this government bus but he must be Mr. Cool. The way he handled the supervised investigation by Mr. Elephant was business as usual between them. Video shared by K.Vijay,” Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forests in Tamil Nadu, said in his post.

According to local media, the encounter took place around 4 pm when the bus was on its way to Munnar. As can be seen in the video, as soon as the driver turns on the road, he sees an elephant standing there. The driver stops the bus and the passengers taking out their cell phones click pictures and videos of the wild elephant.

The locals keep talking enthusiastically until the elephant notices the bus and starts moving towards it. As the animal gets closer, the noise lessens.

The elephant inspects the bus carrying its trunk to the roof of the vehicle. In the process, its teeth touch the windshield of the bus and it breaks.

The driver remains calm throughout the process and moves on as the elephant moves away from the bus. His calm nature is being praised on Twitter.

“The driver really has guts! I wouldn’t have done that… Scary!! But beautiful to look at!” tweeted one user.

Many of the commenters are from Kerala and claimed that the wild animal is called “Padyappa”. He also used the same hashtag in his comments.

The video posted by the IAS officer has garnered over 15,000 views.
