Wimbledon: Focus on Djokovic, Federer as play resumes after rest day

Wimbledon will see some feverish action in the men’s singles on Monday after Sunday’s traditional no-action day as the two favorites – Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer – resume their campaigns in hopes of taking it all the way to the end of the second . Week.

Called ‘Manic Monday’ by the Conservatives, the rest of the day after all the big cannon steps into court for a fourth round of action, Djokovic begins the proceedings in center court against Chile’s 17th seed Cristian Garin.

Roger Federer will take on Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in another match on the same court.

2019 champion Djokovic is vying for his sixth title at the All England Club, while Federer is hoping to win his first title here since 2017. Federer has won eight titles at Wimbledon and is hoping to win a record 21st Grand Slam.

Djokovic had won the last two rounds comfortably in straight sets after being taken to four sets by British wildcard Jack Draper in the opening round. The Serb is not expected to face much trouble against their fourth-round rivals from Chile. However, Garin, ranked 20th in the world, may not be a pushover and Djokovic will have to work hard for his victory.

Federer, on the other hand, has defeated Sonego in his only previous match at Roland Garros in 2019. But despite making it to the fourth round for the first time at Wimbledon, the Italian is hard to crack.

Federer, however, has shown a glimmer of return to form after a slow start against France’s Adrian Mannarino in the opening round. Although he was again taken to four sets in the third round, this time British wildcard Cameron Norie did not see him in much trouble.

Germany’s fourth seed Alexander Zverev will be hoping to make his first-ever entry into the quarterfinals here. The 2020 US Open finalist will take on Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassim, who reached the fourth round after suffering an injury to Australia’s Nick Kyrgios. The 18th-seeded Canadian will be a tough opponent for Zverev, who usually struggles on the All England Club’s grass courts.

Second seed Daniil Medvedev, who stunned Croatian Marin Cilic in a five-setter on Saturday, is an easy opponent in 14th seed Hubert Hrkaz of Poland and should easily take his place in the quarter-finals.

However, the ghost of an upset always hangs over the Russian’s head as he failed to progress past the third round in three games at Wimbledon. Although Medvedev seems to be in good form as he finished runner-up at the Australian Open and reached the quarters at Roland Garros, Harkaz is doing well here and hasn’t dropped a set in three games.
