Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur receives Tunisian Order of Merit

Tennis trailblazer Ons Jabur, who became the first African woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final, was honored on Thursday by Tunisian President Kais Saied for “her remarkable sporting successes”.

The 27-year-old Jabeur, who lost in the Wimbledon final to Russian-born Elena Rybakina last weekend, was awarded the country’s Great Medal of the National Order of Merit.

Saeed commended Jaboor for “raising the country’s flag at international sporting events” and described him as “Tunisia’s ambassador”.

“Congratulations on this success and future successes.”

Nicknamed the “Minister of Happiness” by fans in Tunisia, Jabeur said he hopes to inspire other Arab and African players to succeed in tennis.

“We want to give more hope to the young people who look up to us. We look forward to continuing this momentum. We are proud to be Tunisian and will continue this success story.”
