“Fame is a unique monster. You can’t get too excited when people say good things about you because then when people say bad things about you, you struggle and suffer more,” said Will Smith.

Will Smith is a name that is associated with versatility. Be it his action-entertainer Bad Boys, survival-horror I Am Legend, or drama flick The Pursuit of Happyness — the Hollywood actor has navigated the realms of almost every film genre, delivering hard-hitting performances. But, he also made the headlines for getting embroiled in controversies and his alleged open marriage with his now-separated wife Jada Pinkett Smith. In fact, the actor slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards is still fresh in our memory. Reflecting on these personal issues, Will Smith admitted to committing “tons of mistakes” at the Red Sea International Film Festival, held on December 2 in Jeddah.

During his interactive session at the event, Will Smith said, “I have made tons of mistakes. Fame is a unique monster. You can’t get too excited when people say good things about you because then when people say bad things about you, you struggle and suffer more.” He highlighted the importance of having a clear perspective on who he was and what was his contribution to the world. Although the actor was confident in not wanting “applause” from others to stay focused on his work, he added that “at the same time, I am deeply human. And I am in the process of perfecting my virtue.”

Will Smith’s confession to making mistakes comes nearly two months after his estranged wife Jada Pinkett Smith announced she has parted ways with the Hitch actor. At the NBC News prime-time special episode, Jada revealed that the former pair had been living separately since 2016 because they were “exhausted with trying” to work things out, reports Vulture. Upon being asked why the ex-pair did not share the news earlier, Jada said that it was because they were “just not ready yet” to announce it publicly at that time. So, when Will slapped Chris Rock for cracking jokes about Jada’s alopecia, he and Jada were not officially together. The incident made the Academy ban Will from attending the Oscars for 10 years.

Among the other things Will Smith talked about at the Film Festival, he also dropped a major revelation about his upcoming project with director Michael B Jordan. The 55-year-old confirmed working on I Am Legend 2 — a sequel to the 2007 superhit film. He refused to share any nitty-gritty about the plot or release date.
