Although the Academy Awards is one of the most memorable events in the television industry, the 94th season of the awards turned out to be an unforgettable, or as Chris Rock put it, “the greatest night in the history of television”. The credit for this goes to an incident that eclipsed the entire event of Oscars 2022.
The feud between Will Smith and Chris Rock made headlines, grabbed headlines and sparked a meme fest on social media. Another consequence of the incident came to light recently where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences instituted an official inquiry into this time at the Oscars 2022.
The Academy issued a letter to its members addressing the controversy. In a letter to Variety, the Academy said it “condemns Mr Smith’s actions” and is “upset and outraged” that the incident affected the celebration of the incredible contributions people have made to the industry.
The Academy wrote, “The broadcast of the 94th Oscars on Sunday was to celebrate the many people in our community who did an incredible job last year. We are outraged and annoyed that those moments were captured on stage by one of the nominees.” was affected by unacceptable and harmful behavior.”
Calling out Smith in the next paragraph, the Academy ensured that its board of governors would take “appropriate action against him”. The letter, signed by Academy President David Rubin and CEO Don Hudson, said further action would take a few weeks and would be done under the auspices of California law and standards of conduct set by the Academy.
The incident which has sparked debate around the world and has been condemned by many actors in the industry, took place on the night of the Oscars ceremony on March 28. Chris Rock cracked a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, while landing rib-tickling punches. Responding to the baldness joke, Smith went up to Chris and slapped him.
