Expansion

The by-elections to be held in West Bengal this month are considered very important. Especially after the announcement of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to contest from Bhawanipur, this election has become more interesting. To remain the CM of Bengal, it is necessary for Mamta to win from her traditional Bhavnipur seat, otherwise she will not be able to remain the Chief Minister due to her failure to become an MLA. Meanwhile, BJP has started efforts to remove Mamta from the post of CM. After fielding Priyanka Tibrewal against her, now a BJP agent has demanded the Election Commission to cancel Mamata’s nomination.

The election agent of Priyanka Tibrewal, the BJP candidate from Bhawanipur assembly, has written a letter to the returning officer here, objecting to the nomination of Mamata Banerjee. He has said that in the affidavit filed by Mamta, she did not mention the five criminal cases pending against her. BJP agent Sajal Ghosh also mentioned those cases in his letter and told where cases are registered against him.

According to the information given in the letter, cases were registered against Mamta in five different police stations of Assam. Some of these cases were registered even before the elections in April-May. It is alleged that these cases were not mentioned in their affidavit. However, on this matter, the Trinamool Congress says that if Mamata Banerjee is indeed named in these chargesheets, then she only needed to disclose the cases in the affidavit.

BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal had filed her nomination a day earlier for the by-election to Bhawanipur assembly seat, while Mamata Banerjee filed her nomination on September 10. Voting in Bhawanipur will be held on September 30 and the result will be declared on October 3. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has fielded lawyer Shreejib Biswas from this seat, while the Congress is not participating in the by-polls.
