Wild elephant tramples human in Chhattisgarh; 11th such death in September

A 50-year-old man was crushed to death by a wild elephant in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district on Sunday, a forest official said, taking the death toll to 11 in the state so far this month. He told that the incident took place in Badma village of Pratappur forest area around 2 am. He told that as per the primary information, a folk dance program was going on in the village and after seeing the incident, the victim Veerasai Paikra was going to drop a girl from her village when the incident happened.

“They came face to face with a jumbo, after which the girl managed to escape from the spot, while the elephant grabbed the man and crushed him to death,” he said.

Officials said immediate assistance of Rs 25,000 was provided to the next of kin of the deceased, while the remaining compensation would be disbursed on completion of necessary formalities. With this, 11 people have died in elephant attacks in the state so far this month.

According to government records, 204 people were killed in elephant attacks in Chhattisgarh between 2018 and 2020, while 45 jumbo were killed in the state during the same period. According to officials, movement of at least 307 elephants in 16 herds has been reported recently from different parts of the state, especially from Surajpur, Raigad, Mahasamund, Korba, Balrampur, Jashpur, Gariaband, Balod districts.
