WI vs IRE, 3rd ODI: Ireland beat West Indies by 2 wickets to register historic ODI series win

Ireland registered a historic series win over West Indies by registering a two-wicket win in the One Day International at Sabina Park on Sunday.

A 2–1 back series win from the third ODI gave Ireland their first ODI series win away from home against a full member. This was only the second series win against a full member, after Zimbabwe stayed at home in 2019.

After bowling out West Indies for 212 in 45 overs, Ireland reached the 45th match with a 214-8 win.

It was a remarkable end to a COVID-19-disrupted two-nation tour, which began with Ireland’s own historic defeat to a host United States in a Twenty20.

William Porterfield lost the first ball in Ireland’s chase on Sunday, but the batting was mainly patient and practical.

The top order did its job.

Stand-in skipper Paul Stirling made 44 off 38 balls with the help of five fours and a six before being made by Jason Holder at the slips. Sterling was dismissed at 73-2.

Number three batsman Andy McBrine scored 59 runs in 100 balls after taking four wickets, before he fell behind. He was dismissed at 152-3 and was eventually awarded the second straight Man of the Match award. This also earned him the Man of the Series. His offspin got West Indies 10 of 30 wickets in the series.

No. 4 Harry Tector scored his third fifty in three matches by scoring 52 runs in 76 balls. Tector pushed Ireland to the brink of victory when he was dismissed for 197-6 in the 42nd over.

Two wickets in three balls by Akeel Hossein added some late play, but the tailed Craig Young completed Ireland’s victory with 5.1 overs remaining for the match and series.

West Indies won the first ODI by defending 269 runs, lost the second on Thursday after scoring 229 runs, and gave themselves little chance at Sabina Park by scoring only 212 runs.

Opener Shai Hope gave West Indies a perfect platform. His eighth boundary scored the team’s 50 in the eighth over and his ninth boundary in the 10th over scored the fastest fifty of his career in 37 balls.

When he was dismissed for 53 by hooking Young at fine leg, West Indies were reduced to 119-7 from 72 for no loss, leading 47-7 in the space of 17 overs.

McBrine contributed when he dismissed Nicholas Pooran (2) and Shamar Brooks (1) lbw, and took the lead from captain Kieron Pollard (3).

West Indies, which didn’t look like reaching 150, got over 200 thanks to Holder – dropped to 30 – scoring 44 before being run out, Hossein scored 23 before being brilliantly caught-and-bowled by McBrine. Scored runs, and Odeon Smith was making. An unbeaten 20.
