It was curtains for India at the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as they lost to Australia in the semi-finals on Thursday.

An emotional Harmanpreet Kaur wears sunglasses after witnessing the post-match presentation ceremony India Australia suffered a five-run defeat in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 on Thursday. India captain Harmanpreet revived their chase of 173 with a fighting half-century, but her run-out during the latter half of the innings allowed Australia to tighten their grip on the contest.

This was the second time in a row that an Australian team broke Indian hearts in the T20 World Cup. India finished runners-up in the 2020 edition losing to Australia in the summit clash in front of a record crowd.

Harmanpreet, 33, revealed that the sunglasses are to hide her tears as she promised not to let her country down again.

Harmanpreet said, “I don’t want my country to see me crying, that’s why I am wearing these glasses, I promise, we will improve and will not let our country down like this again.”

The manner in which Harmanpreet was run out became a major talking point of the competition. In his attempt to take the second run, the Indian jammed his bat inches before ground at the striker’s end, hindering his running and as a result, wicket-keeper Alyssa Healy had enough time to remove the bails.

Harmanpreet made a 34-ball 52 to walk back with India 133/5, still needing 40 runs to win.

“It couldn’t have been more unlucky than the way I got run out,” she said. The way we played in this tournament.

“We know we have a good batting line-up, even if we lose early wickets. Jamie needs to be given credit for the way he batted today. He gave us the momentum we were looking for, Harmanpreet said.
