A day after farmers’ unions gave an ultimatum to the government on the issue of MSP, the Congress on Sunday questioned the government on the issue.

Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said, “Why is the MSP law not being passed? Why is the minister not being sacked in the Lakhimpur Kheri case? Why is the Kisan Sangh not being called for a meeting? Black agriculture laws should be withdrawn.” It is just an election stunt. Will November 19, 2021, when the agricultural laws are withdrawn, turn into a ‘cheat day’?”

The United Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Saturday alleged that no one is moving forward on the issue of MSP.

“No progress has been made. No committee has been formed on Minimum Support Price (MSP). In Haryana only some action has been taken on withdrawal of cases against farmers, but not much progress has been made in that matter in other states including Delhi No discussion on our demand regarding electricity bills,” SKM leader Yudhveer Singh said at a media conference

The SKM, a federation of 40-odd farmer organisations, had on December 9 announced suspension of their 15-month-long agitation, which began to protest three controversial agriculture laws passed in 2020.

Lakhimpur Kheri was the place where a speeding vehicle on October 4 crushed half a dozen people, including farmers and a journalist, who allegedly belonged to Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni’s son. The farmers have demanded action against Teni and his son, but no action has been taken so far.

The SKM also announced support for the All India Strike by trade unions on 23 and 24 February because their demands included MSP and also because trade unions supported the farmers’ movement.
