Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that Rishabh Pant could benefit from watching his batting from the past to score more quickly for his franchise Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2022. Though Pant has scored decent runs in three innings in the T20 league so far, the scoring-rate is not as high as he would like to be.

In his team’s first season against Mumbai Indians, he was dismissed for 1, but against Gujarat Titans he scored 43 runs at 29 (strike-rate 148.28). He then scored 39 runs against Lucknow Super Giants, but Pant consumed 36 balls (strike-rate 108.33) and that could be the difference between victory and defeat for DC, feels Sehwag.
Sehwag says Pant will have to change his ‘approach’ and not get stuck in ‘responsible batting’ mode as he is the captain.
“The only point Rishabh Pant needs to worry about is from which point of view he is playing. Wins and losses will happen, says Sehwag cricbuzz, He said, “The number of balls he played, 30 or 32 balls, you can score 60 runs in the same number of balls. So if Pant had scored 20 more runs, it would have proved costly for LSG, but those runs were not made.”
“Pant should not change his approach and (must) play with freedom. The day he fires, we all know he will win the match. But if he thinks ‘I am the captain then I should play with more responsibility’ then I don’t think he will be very successful this year. It’s not his style to play responsibly or he feels he has to be there till the end.”
Sehwag says that if Pant feels that the ball is in his arc then he should get a big hit.
“Pant should start hitting if he gets a bad delivery or takes a single, so there shouldn’t be a third option in his mind. They should have a clear thinking that ‘if it’s on my radar, I’ll kill it’,” he advised.
Asked if Pant should take lessons from Sehwag’s batting school by watching old videos of the great opener, he replied, “Why me? He should watch his (old) video. He has played like this whether it is Test or ODI or T20, he has batted like this before. So he should see how he played himself, sometimes it gives you confidence.”
