Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday sought to know who had proposed concretization of nearly 400 km of roads in Mumbai, days after alleged irregularities in tenders floated for repairing roads.

Speaking to reporters, Thackeray also asked if there was any time limit for completing the road work.

He also asked that when there is no public representative, mayor or standing committee in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), how appropriate is it for the administrator to propose and approve concretization of roads himself.

The tenure of the BMC ended in March last year and its elections are due.

Thackeray had on Friday alleged that tenders for concreting of roads in Mumbai were floated at a higher cost for the benefit of contractors and should be cancelled. He had said that new contracts worth over Rs 6,000 crore have been issued for paving 400 km of roads in the city.

On Monday, Thackeray asked, “Who proposed concretization of roads as local representatives like corporators propose road repairs?” He said there are small lanes where asphalt (for road coating) is being used for years. The drive, in the case of Pedder Road and Marine, is asphalt mastic (coating) and they are still in good condition.
