Sunrisers Hyderabad made their debut for Umran Malik in the 49th match of the tournament against Kolkata Knight Riders. He was selected in the squad in place of T Natarajan who was ruled out of the tournament.

Not much was known about the youngster until he was picked for the season by SRH. However, like Abdul Samad, he was groomed by former India cricketer Irfan Pathan, who also acts as a mentor-cum-coach. He hasn’t played much competitive cricket so far, taking a total of four wickets in four matches in domestic cricket for Jammu and Kashmir. Umran performed brilliantly in his T20I debut, picking up three crucial wickets and conceding just 24 runs in his quota of four overs against the Railways.

He was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad as a net bowler even before the selection call came as Natarajan tested positive. SRH are currently in the bottom half of the IPL 2021 points table with just one win from eight matches. They will have to win their remaining six matches and then rely on net run rate equations to make the playoffs.

“Under Regulation 6.1(c), franchises are permitted to sign a short-term replacement player until the original team member is permitted to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment,” a IPL A release was issued on Malik’s inclusion in the Hyderabad team.

Here’s what Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson said about him: “It’s an unfortunate situation, but with the development of players, there’s a lot to be achieved in tough conditions, especially against a team like Kolkata. Umran Malik has come in place of Sandeep Sharma to improve the balance in the team. He is an exciting fast bowling talent.”
