Randhawa initially contested in 2002 for the Punjab Assembly from Fatehgarh Churian by defeating Nirmal Singh Kahlon of Akali Dal. He was elected from the new constituency of Dera Baba Nanak in 2012. He was re-elected as MLA from Dera Baba Naka assembly constituency in 2017.

A traditional Congressman, Randhawa has played a key role in opposing Captain Amarinder Singh.

Asked by media persons on Sunday whether it can be assumed that he is talking to a future Chief Minister, Randhawa quipped, “You are talking to a Congressman”.

Taking a veiled dig at Amarinder Singh, he said, “A chief minister (in his post) remains as long as his party, the people of the state stand by him”.

When asked how soon the name of the new CLP leader could be announced, Randhawa said, “We have authorized the Congress president in this regard.”

He said that the senior leadership of the party has to talk to not only the MLAs but also other veterans before finalizing the name. Asked why it is taking so long to announce a CLP leader, he said, “If you have to make a village sarpanch, sometimes it takes 20 days to decide.”

However, he assured that the name of the new CLP leader would be announced later.
