Where to draw lines with friends, girls should know, JNU’s ‘methods’ to stop sexual harassment

The ‘misogynistic’ notification of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) should be withdrawn. National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma made such a demand. The notice said girls need to know how to draw a ‘typical’ line in relationships with male friends to prevent sexual harassment.

On Tuesday, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women said on Twitter, ‘Why are girls always taught? This time it is time to teach the criminals, not the criminals. The malicious guidelines of Jawaharlal Nehru University should be withdrawn. The opinion of the internal committee (Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Internal Complaints Committee or ICC) should be on behalf of the victims.

Recently a notification was issued by the Internal Complaints Committee of JNU. It was told that on January 18 of the new year, a counseling session on sexual harassment has been organized. The notification claims that it will be done every month from now on and will inform students against sexual harassment. The statement said, “The ICC has encountered several incidents where sexual harassment between close friends has been reported. The fine line between friendly chat and sexual harassment is usually crossed by boys (sometimes- Sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally). To prevent this kind of harassment, girls need to know how to draw a line between them and their male friends.

A heated debate broke out over that part of the notification. Some students and teachers were upset that the girls were being blamed for sexual harassment. Amidst that debate, Presiding Officer of JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee, Poonam Kumari said, “Everyone has their own point of view. How they see things is different for everyone. They can look at the counseling session positively and feel that such a program has been taken up.
