former captain of india M S Dhoni And Suresh Raina share a great bond on and off the field. Even fans are aware of the bond and CSK fans in particular refer to the two as ‘Thala’ and ‘Chinna Thala’. Raina played a key role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory under Dhoni. Not only this, both the players had announced their retirement on the same date i.e. August 20 last year.

But there was a time when both had to play for different teams – Raina for Gujarat Lions and Dhoni for Rising Pune Supergiant. In a recent conversation, Raina recalled the time when he faced different emotions in front of RPS, especially Dhoni.
Raina told Gaurav Kapoor in the latest episode of the 22 Yarns podcast uploaded on Spotify, “Yes, there were mixed feelings. I remember we were playing in Rajkot and Ashwin was bowling.” McCullum was on the non-striker’s end; I was batting; Dhoni was keeping brother; Faf du Plessis was standing at first slip. It was like we were playing our neighborhood Kanga League! (laughs),” Raina said. said.
Raina also recalled the welcome extended by Dhoni. “When I went to bat, Dhoni bhai said, ‘Aao aao captain sahib, aao’, (welcome captain) and I said ‘Aarey hain hai bhai, zara behind ho little!’ (I am coming brother, move first!) It was all so much fun,” Raina said.
Raina narrated another incident from a T20I in Ireland when Dhoni was not part of the team and later brought a drink for the left-hander. “We went to Ireland in 2018 and enjoyed the matches after that. Dhoni bhai had gone there for me with a drink,” Raina recalled.

“I remember a moment. Dhoni bhai thought I often asked for gloves and bat a lot when I was batting, so he brought the whole kit bag to the ground and said: ‘Take whatever you want, Don’t call me again’ I think I was batting with Rahul and we both hit half-centuries. He (Dhoni) said ‘I won’t come again, it’s too cold’. (laughs),” Raina said. Said further.
“I still said, ‘Do one thing, get a hold too’. And he replied: ‘Bohot bade wala hai tu, tu rukja, paani pee, main leke aata hona’. So it was that kind of fun. I thought that that day I will take full revenge.
