The Tamil film industry is now full of male superstars like Ajith Kumar, Thalapathy Vijay and Rajinikanth among others. All of them have won accolades from cinephiles for their stellar performances over the years. But there was a time when Tamil films were synonymous with just one name that dominated the film scene for nearly three decades: MG Ramachandran.

Apart from acting, MGR is also remembered for an unfortunate incident in which he was almost killed by a fellow actor, MR Radha. The incident took place on January 13, 1967, a day before the release of MGR’s film Thakku Thalimagan. This was also the time when MGR was campaigning for his political party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

As per reports, MR Radha went to MGR’s house with producer KK Vasu. Vasu’s film Petralthan Pillaya starring MGR as the protagonist and MR Radha as the antagonist was successful at the box office. Vasu decided to repeat this hit hero-villain combination in another film. For this he and MR Radha went to MGR’s house in St. Thomas Mount, where they were warmly received.

They were chatting among themselves and having a good time when suddenly a heated argument broke out between MR. Radha and Mgr. The Idhe Na Sawaal actor accused MGR of deliberately destroying his career and stood up to storm out in anger. Suddenly, MR Radha took out a revolver tucked in his dhoti and shot MGR at point blank range.

MGR had bullet injuries on his neck and below the left ear. Vasu was extremely surprised by this sudden turn of events, but suddenly came to his senses and pounced on her. He tried to stop her from shooting again, but MR Radha escaped his clutches and shot himself twice.

Both the actors were taken to the Government Hospital, Royapettah in Madras for immediate treatment of their hemorrhagic injuries and later to the General Hospital, Madras. After the emergency operation by the doctors, the condition of both is being told out of danger. P Lakshmanan, Sessions Judge, Madras sentenced MR Radha to 7 years rigorous imprisonment for the attempt to murder MGR.
