England and India hold the record for most runs in a day in the purest format of the game. This record dates back to 1936 as no other team has been able to achieve it till now. July 27, 1936, was a golden day in the history of Test cricket as England and India scored 588 runs while playing at the prestigious Old Trafford in Manchester.

The match started with India batting first as the visiting captain Maharaja of Vizianagaram won the toss. India got off to a poor start in the Test and fell to the score of 203. Headley was the man of the hour for Variety England as he took four wickets.

Batting in the second innings, England ended the first day at 173 for two, with Wally Hammond and Stan Worthington in the middle. Starting the second day with an overnight score of 173, Hammond displayed his brilliant batting skills by adding 167 runs. Apart from Hammond, Joe Hardstaff was also good with the Willows as he played a remarkable knock of 94 runs. England scored 398 runs for the loss of six wickets on the second day and scored a total of 571 runs.

After a poor batting performance in the first innings, India made a memorable comeback on their next batting opportunity. The opening pair of Vijay Merchant and Mushtaq Ali finished the second day without loss for 190 runs. The two parted ways the next morning at 203 hrs, but managed to enter their names in the history books.

Merchant added 114 runs while Ali scored 112 runs. His exploits with the willow ensured that India remained unbeaten on 390 for the loss of five wickets. This crucial match eventually ended in a draw.
