Meta-owned instant messaging application WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new one-to-many tool called ‘Channels’ for disseminating information. With the Channels feature, users will be able to easily receive useful updates from people they choose to receive news from. This feature is currently under development and will be available in future updates of the app.

“Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.8.0.75 update available on the TestFlight app, we learned that WhatsApp is also working on bringing this feature to the iOS app in the future,” WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp, reported.

As per the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is planning to rename the Status tab to “Update” as channels will also be listed in this section of the app. WhatsApp Channel is a private tool where the phone number and information of the user joining the channel is always hidden.

However, messages received within a channel are not end-to-end encrypted because the concept of one-to-many does not make much sense for channels. It is important to note that channels will not affect end-to-end encryption of private messaging, which continues to be end-to-end encrypted.

Because it is an optional extension of private messaging and not focused on a public social network, people always have control over which channels they subscribe to, and no one can see who they follow , regardless of whether they have added them as contacts or not, the report said.

Furthermore, people will not auto-subscribe to channels because there are no algorithmic recommendations or social graphs that send users content they didn’t choose to watch.

According to the report, channels will also support handles, so users can search for a specific WhatsApp channel by entering the username within WhatsApp.

The feature is designed to improve the reach of the channels, making it easier for users to receive updates of their choice. Channels are currently under development and will be released in future updates of WhatsApp.
