WhatsApp Scammers Are Trying to Hijack Your Account Again: Here’s What’s Happening and How to Stay Safe

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps and people around the world use the Meta-owned app for their daily communication and file sharing. However, given the popularity, WhatsApp is also susceptible to hacks and scams.

A WhatsApp OTP scam has now surfaced again where scammers are taking possession of people WhatsApp To gain access to the instant messaging app, by sending an OTP to their number. What it does is that it activates call forwarding for Jio and Airtel users.

Once this is done, the attacker will log into WhatsApp with the victim’s number and send an OTP via call. Since they have hooked up the victim’s number to the call, it will be forwarded to the number provided, and the hacker will log into WhatsApp from the victim’s account.

Now, this is not the first time that scammers have used such tricks to hack people’s WhatsApp. Last year also the same trick was used by scammers by sending WhatsApp OTP to a person’s mobile via SMS. Then, the hacker will text them saying that their WhatsApp will be deactivated unless they send the OTP to another number.

This scam works globally and scammers from all countries have tried this approach. This is because when logging in to a new or different device, WhatsApp’s authentication requires a 6 digit verification code that is usually sent to the registered mobile number. Users can choose to receive this OTP via text or through a call from WhatsApp.

Users are advised to be extremely cautious and never share any OTP or verification code with anyone. If you are getting WhatsApp OTP on your phone number without any reason, then the best thing to do is to do nothing and not answer any calls that you receive later.
