WhatsApp plans to promote digital payments in villages across India

The pilot named ‘Digital Payments Utsav’ has started on October 15, 2021 in Kyatanahalli village of Mandya district of Karnataka.

To promote the use of WhatsApp Payments across India, WhatsApp has announced its pilot program of “adopting” 500 villages across Karnataka and Maharashtra.

A pilot named ‘Digital Payments Utsav’ has started on October 15, 2021 at Kayathanhalli village in Mandya district of Karnataka, where on-ground facilitators introduced villagers to various aspects of digital payments, including – signing up for UPI To set up UPI account. and security best practices of using digital payments.

The pilot project aims to take digital payments at the grassroots level and help new users transition to digital payments.

“We have launched this pilot program in 500 villages across Karnataka and Maharashtra as part of our mission to add the next 500 million to the digital payments ecosystem. We believe that the ease of use and reliability of WhatsApp can drive the adoption of UPI, including among users at the bottom of the pyramid. We will continue to make a meaningful contribution in this journey of educating the users at the grassroots level so that they can rely on digital payments as they gradually transition to a ‘cash-only’ way of financial life,” said India’s Head of India Abhijit Bose said, WhatsApp.

WhatsApp claimed that the initial results of the pilot program have been encouraging.

Villagers have started adopting ‘Pay on WhatsApp’ as a new mode of payment. Scores of other people and small and medium businesses – village-grocery-store or beauty-parlor owners – are now accepting and receiving payments digitally using ‘Pay on WhatsApp’.
