Actor Vijay Sethupathi, recognized not only in Tamil cinema but also nationally after his antagonist role in the blockbuster ‘Jawan’ last year, is currently engaged in promoting his upcoming film, ‘Merry Christmas,’ alongside Katrina Kaif. However, during a recent press conference in Chennai, the actor became visibly upset when a reporter inquired about his stance on Tamil Nadu politics, specifically regarding opposition to Hindi.
In response to the reporter’s question, Vijay Sethupathi interjected and asserted in Tamil, “Hindi, as a language, was never opposed.” When the reporter further inquired if the language should be learned, Vijay expressed his frustration, stating, “I remember you asked this kind of question even when Aamir Khan sir came, didn’t you? Why do you ask this question all the time? What’s going to happen if you ask me this question? First, they (political leaders) didn’t say don’t study Hindi. They told us not to impose Hindi. A lot of people here are studying Hindi. No one stopped us. Minister PTR (Thyagarajan) has clearly given an explanation for this. Go and see.”

During the Chennai press conference with Katrina Kaif and other participants, Vijay Sethupathi also addressed the ongoing debate surrounding south-north films, stating, “During a teaser launch, I was asked about the wall between the south and north film industries. A person on the stage said that after the entry of OTT, the wall crumbled, which is clearly evident now.”
After facing several delays, the film “Merry Christmas,” directed by Sriram Raghavan of ‘Andhadhun’ fame, is now scheduled for release in theaters on January 12, coinciding with the Pongal holiday. The movie had experienced multiple postponements, initially set to clash with Sidharth Malhotra’s ‘Yodha’ on December 8, 2023. However, both films were rescheduled to avoid a box office clash with Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal,’ which premiered on December 1.
‘Merry Christmas’ was shot in two languages, Tamil and Hindi, with different supporting actors. In addition to Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif, the Hindi version features Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan, and Tinnu Anand.
