Sindoor – A luscious red in the middle part of your hair sends a simple message – you are married. But is the message really that simple? From the moment a woman is put on sindoor at the time of her marriage, socio-religious norms dictate that she should live with it, or as long as her marriage lasts. Sindoor is applied for the first time when the bridegroom recites slokas and applies vermilion to the bride during the wedding ceremony. This ceremony is known as sindoor-daan and is performed even in the present day.

Sindoor and its astrological significance

According to Hindu astrology, the house of Aries or Aries is located on the forehead. Aries is ruled by Mars and its color is red which is considered auspicious. This is another reason why red sindoor is applied on the forehead and on the parting of the hair. Also, both are signs of good luck (good luck). Similarly vermilion is considered a symbol of female power of Shakti.

The act of applying vermilion on the bride’s forehead is also considered a blessing. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the couple and ward off malevolent spirits, protecting the couple from harm. Therefore, sindoor is not only a symbol of love and devotion but also a source of protection and blessings for the newly married couple.

Red is also known as the color of love and passion and hence is used by Indian women to win the hearts of their husbands. Sindoor signifies that the woman is married and under the protection of her husband and thus no one should cast an evil eye on her. Also, the color of fire, blood and power, red indicates that women should never be treated as Shakti (goddess of strength) and should be respected. She can be a spark of fire or a tender flower by her will to protect herself as well as her motherland.
