Emoinu Iratpa or Emoinu Iratpa is celebrated in Wakaching on the 12th day of the lunar month of Meitei.

Emoinu Iratpa or Emoinu Iratpa is a festival majorly celebrated by the Meitei community in Manipur. It is dedicated to the goddess ‘Imoinu Ahongbi’. The day is celebrated on the 12th day of the Meitei lunar month of Vakaching. This means that the festival falls in either December or January as per the Gregorian calendar. This year this festival is falling on 3rd January. Here’s all you need to know about this festival of lights:

Imoinu Irapta: History

‘Imoinu’ or ‘Emoinu’ is the goddess to whom this festival is dedicated. In Meitei mythology, she is associated with the household, hearth, kitchen, wealth, peace and prosperity. She is also associated as one of the incarnations of the goddess Limarel Sidabi.

The festival is believed to bring immense wealth and prosperity to the worshipers of Goddess Imoinu. Along with this, people pray for peace and positivity in their lives. People offer rice, vegetables and fruits to the goddess during Imoinu Irapta. The Meitei community also provides rice, vegetables and fish, mostly alago attu, which are kept in their kitchens.

You will notice that the streets are decorated with lights all over the area. They are lit at night to welcome the Goddess.

Is Imoinu Irtpa a bank holiday?

Imoinu Irtpa is considered a bank holiday in the state of Manipur. In the list of holidays for 2023 to be celebrated by all the banks in the state of Manipur, the festival is marked on 3rd January. Under section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments, Act, 1881 (XXVI of 1881), the Government of Manipur has declared it to be a bank holiday.

Other bank holidays observed by the state in January are Gana-Nagai on 4 January, the death anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh on 9 January and Republic Day on 26 January.
