According to officials, fraudsters obtain mobile connections using fake or forged documents to commit cyber crimes. Hence DoT developed AI-powered tool ASTR, which also includes data analytics technology, to identify SIMs issued using such documents

ASTR, an artificial intelligence and facial recognition-powered solution for telecom SIM subscriber verification, has helped DoT to detect 40.87 lakh suspicious mobile connections and block 36.61 lakh connections so far.

According to DoT data, the highest number of SIMs were disconnected in West Bengal (12,34,111), followed by Haryana (5,24,287), Bihar-Jharkhand (3,27,246), Madhya Pradesh (2,28,072), and North The location of the region. East (2,04,658).

Similar action was also taken in other states like Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. However, the lowest number of SIM disconnection cases have been reported in Himachal Pradesh, where the number is 3,491.

In the first phase of paper-based KYC, the authorities analyzed over 87 crore mobile connections. Param-Siddhi supercomputer was employed for such huge data processing.

During the investigation, several such cases came to light when fraudsters used a picture to get hundreds of connections. Apart from detecting and blocking suspicious connections, service providers have blacklisted 40,123 points of sale (PoS) – where a customer pays for services – involved in selling such mobile connections, and across India More than 150 FIRs have been registered.

The highest number of blacklisted PoS was in Uttar Pradesh-East (13,067), followed by West Bengal (10,915), Kolkata (3,937), Haryana (3,024), Bihar including Jharkhand (2,904) and Odisha (2,417) .

Union Minister for Railways, Communications and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnav said during the launch of Sanchar Saathi on Tuesday: “In one case, a person made 5,300 connections using the same image with different names, while in another, one The person made 6,800 connections. Similarly. These are some extreme examples of such incidents.”
