West Indies lose WTC points, place eighth below Bangladesh

Dubai: West Indies slipped to eighth in the World Test Championship standings after being penalized for a slow over rate with two points during the drawn first Test against England in Antigua on Monday.

The ICC said that the Craig Brathwaite-led side got two overs short after taking into account proper adjustments and time allowances.

As a result, West Indies were fined 40 per cent of their match fees and also fined two points in the ICC World Test Championship standings, falling down to eighth place in the nine-steam standings.

They are one of three teams to receive points due to penalty overs.

It was West Indies’ first slow over-rate offense in the 2021-2023 championship cycle, while India have got three points and ninth-placed England have docked 10 from 10 matches so far.

According to the WTC terms of play, a team will be fined one WTC point and 20 percent of their match fee for each over they fail to bowl in the allotted time.

West Indies’ all-round seam attack bowled most of the 188.5 overs as England batted long in both innings in the Antigua Test.

West Indies frontline spinner Veerasamy Parmoul sent just 25 overs of his left-arm spin in the match, which was a key factor in the slow over-rate.

Brathwaite has pointed to this as an area for improvement ahead of the second Test in Barbados from Wednesday.

“There are a few areas we can improve on in terms of run rate and it’s just to set the ground up and bowl and be disciplined enough to bowl in that area,” Brathwaite said.
