Local TMC leader, Saifuddin Laskar, whose wife is a panchayat pradhan, was shot dead by miscreants outside his home in Joynagar on Monday

Tension engulfed a West Bengal town after the murder of a local Trinamool Congress leader and the lynching that followed in the South 24th Parganas district. Local TMC leader, Saifuddin Laskar, whose wife is a panchayat pradhan, was shot dead by miscreants outside his home in Joynagar on Monday. Laskar headed the Trinamool unit in Joynagar’s Bamungachi area.

Laskar’s death prompted his supporters to lynch an alleged assailant, officials said. Locals said the mob caught one of the alleged assailants and beat him to death. Several homes were also set on fire during the commotion.

The incident sparked a war of words between the ruling TMC and the opposition CPI(M).

Local TMC claimed that CPI(M) supporters were behind the Laskar’s murder. CPI(M), on the other hand, alleged that Laskar supporters ransacked their houses and even set fire to some after the incident.

CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty called the TMC leader’s death an “unfortunate” incident and stressed that the police must conduct a proper investigation to catch the accused and unravel the conspiracy.

“The murder of Saifuddin Laskar is the result of internal strife within the TMC, it is no use blaming the CPI(M),” he said.

Police said a case has been registered in connection with the killing of the TMC leader and one accused has been arrested. Further investigation into the case is underway.
