Nivedita Mukherjee, a resident of West Bengal, had met Ankit Chaudhary, 31, a resident of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, last year through a common friend. He does construction business in Dehradun. On 25 April, she told her family in West Bengal that she was going to live with Ankit, but after three days she stopped answering his phone.

Her family got suspicious and traced Ankit through social media, when they contacted her she told them that they had an argument and she left the house but will be back soon. He then used the victim’s social media account to talk to her cousin Antara, who pretended to be Nivedita all the time.

“I last heard from Nivedita in April when she told us that she was leaving with her boyfriend. When we spoke to Ankit, he told us that he too was trying to find my sister while sending us messages posing as her from his social media account. We got suspicious only after Nivedita dodged our calls. When we confronted Ankit, he told us that he fell from the balcony and died,” Antara told Times of India.

Nivedita’s family lodged a complaint and the police registered an FIR against Choudhary. Burdwan’s family approached Dehradun Police and alleged that their daughter Nivedita Mukherjee was murdered by her live-in partner. When they interrogated the accused he broke down and took him to the spot, he said that he went 15 km away and used petrol to burn Nivedita’s body.

The officer involved in the case said that he has been booked for murder as the motive behind Nivedita’s murder is yet to be ascertained. They dismiss the balcony story as the four-foot-long grille that makes it impossible for anyone to fall.

“The accused said that the woman fell from the balcony at midnight. Why didn’t she call an ambulance?”, the officer involved in the investigation was quoted as saying by TOI.

Forensic experts have confirmed that the remains belonged to a woman and are examining them. “We found bones including a skull, an arm and a leg. They were scattered all over the area,” Rajpur station officer Rajesh Shah said.

The investigation is still on and Nivedita’s family is hopeful that they will get justice.
