The Student Credit Card scheme was launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on June 30 this year.

West Bengal government will issue student credit card from today. According to sources, student credit cards will be issued to 180 applicants on Monday and Tuesday through the offices of various district magistrates across the state. Most of the students in the initial stage are interested in pursuing beneficiary management and business courses.

Of the total applicants for Phase I, five are from Alipurduar, two from Darjeeling, five from Cooch Behar, one from Kalimpong, eleven from Malda, nine from North Dinajpur, three from Nadia, three from Jalpaiguri, six from West Burdwan and thirty. From three East Burdwan districts. Similarly, 36 students from Hooghly, six from Howrah, four from North 24 Parganas, ten from South 24 Parganas, eight from East Midnapore, 14 from Bankura, five from West Midnapore and ten from Kolkata would be given credit cards.

Another state-owned bank has flagged off loans through student credit cards. The Higher Education Department is also in touch with two other public sector banks. Higher education department officials are hoping that all the complexities will be resolved with proper discussion with the bank officials.

The number of applicants has already reached 60,000. It is believed that at the beginning of the year many students will get the benefit of loan through student credit card.
