Wedding bells for Hyderabad gay couple who exchanged rings and vows. Hyderabad News – Times of India

Hyderabad: I do! Said a gay couple, who made their relationship official on December 18 in a private ceremony held on the outskirts of the city.
At a time when same-sex marriages are illegal in India, the couple held a ‘promise ceremony’ in which they exchanged rings and vows and celebrated their union with around 60 family and close friends.
wearing a white tuxedo, Supriyo Chakraborty, 31 more Abhay Dange, 34 completed their 8-year long relationship in the ceremony.
“For the wedding, we walked down the aisle and exchanged vows and rings. Our union was celebrated among wedding bells that were distributed among all our guests. After the event, Best Men speeches were given, said Chakraborty. His ceremony was conducted by sophia david, a friend who is also part of the LGBTQ community in Hyderabad.
Although no matrimonial rituals or formalities were involved, the couple brought together Bengali and Punjabi traditions. “Mehndi is always a women-centric ceremony. We wanted to break that stereotype by wearing the same for all men at the venue. During Haldi, we wore a Bengali topper (a headgear). This was followed by a sangeet ceremony in which Kathak Demonstrations were put on display,” Chakraborty said.
Even though Indian law does not recognize husband and their relationship as husband, the couple refer to themselves as ‘soul mates’. “Ever since we announced our union, we have got mixed response from the people. By and large, people have been very supportive of our relationship and this ceremony was a celebration of that,” Chakraborty said.
