Weather Updates: Amid Cold Wave, Delhi Predicted To Receive Rainfall on Jan 12, 13; Dense Fog Delays Flights, Trains

Answer India The mercury remained well below the freezing point at most places in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, while dense fog affected road and rail traffic in Delhi and Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, the Meteorological Department has predicted light rain on January 12, 13 due to western disturbances in the region. Citizens woke up to similar cold weather on Wednesday but the exact temperature is not known.

A fresh western disturbance affecting northwest India brought down cold wave conditions in Delhi even as a dense layer of fog reduced the visibility to just 50 metres. Many trains and flights are running late due to dense fog in the morning.

Srinagar record 1.8 degree Celsius

In Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius on Monday night, up by 0.9 degrees from the previous night, officials said.

He said Qazigund, the gateway to the valley, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius, while it was minus 3.6 degrees in Kokernag in south Kashmir.

It was minus 2.7 degrees Celsius in Kupwara and minus 3.2 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam.

The mercury remained below the 10-degree mark at all weather stations in the Valley.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of moderate snowfall at many places in the high altitude areas.

Light to moderate snowfall is expected in the plains of the valley. The weather office said that there is a possibility of light snowfall with rain in the plains of Jammu at many places in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the harshest winter period of 40 days when the chances of snowfall are maximum.

‘Chillai Kalan’ begins on 21st December and ends on 30th January. Even after this the cold wave continues and it is followed by 20 days of ‘Chillai Khurd’ (small cold) and 10 days of ‘Chillai Bachha’ (baby cold).

The mercury rose a few degrees in Delhi, giving Delhiites some respite from the cold. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, was recorded at 6.4 degrees Celsius as against Monday’s 3.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 18.7 degree Celsius.

The weather stations at Lodhi Road and Palam recorded minimum temperatures of 6.4°C and 7.5°C.

“Cold wave conditions have abated from the plains in northwest India. “There is no possibility of cold wave over the region for the next four days,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement.

Dense fog, cold day conditions to continue in Punjab, Haryana and UP

However, dense to very dense fog and cold day conditions will continue over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and will gradually subside thereafter.

Light drizzle is expected in the capital on Thursday as well. An IMD official said the Palam observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport recorded a visibility level of 50 metres.

39 trains running late

A Northern Railway spokesperson said 39 trains were running late by one hour to five-and-a-half hours due to fog.

Satellite images showed a dense layer of fog over vast areas of northern India, extending from Punjab to Bihar to Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The Meteorological Department said that a significant drop in temperature has been recorded in large parts of Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, where severe cold wave conditions prevailed in most of the divisions.

The Meteorological Center in Lucknow said on Tuesday that there was a severe cold wave with dense fog at many places.

The day temperatures in Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad and Meerut divisions were significantly below normal while Kanpur, Varanasi, Jhansi, Agra and Prayagraj divisions recorded below normal temperatures during the last 24 hours.

Night temperature in UP, Lucknow below normal

The night temperature in Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Kanpur divisions also remained much below normal during this period.

Etawah was the coldest place in Uttar Pradesh during this period, recording a minimum temperature of 2.8 degree Celsius.

During this, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4 degree Celsius in Hardoi, 5.2 degree in Hamirpur and 5.5 degree in Muzaffarnagar, Ayodhya and Barabanki.

No respite is expected as dense fog and cold wave conditions will continue at many places in the next 24 hours, the Meteorological Department said.

Severe cold conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, with Bathinda being the coldest place in the region with a minimum temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Amritsar record 9.2 degree Celsius

According to the Meteorological Department report, Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius and Ludhiana recorded 8.2 degrees Celsius.

Patiala recorded a minimum temperature of 7.9 degrees Celsius, Pathankot 10.4 degrees Celsius, Faridkot 6 degrees Celsius and Gurdaspur 6.5 degrees Celsius in Haryana, Bhiwani recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Ambala recorded 8.2 degrees Celsius, Hisar 4.3 degrees Celsius, Karnal 8.5 degrees Celsius, Narnaul 5 degrees Celsius, Rohtak 7.2 degrees Celsius and Sirsa 4 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius.
