‘We expect those deliveries from Axar, not him’: Former batsman slams Chahal for his bowling approach in second T20I

Chasing 149 in the second T20I in Cuttack on Sunday, the South Africans dominated the Indian spinners. Bhuvneshwar Kumar shattered the Proteas’ top order with three wickets in the powerplay, followed by Heinrich Klaasen and visiting captain Temba Bavuma together to ensure a 4-wicket win.

India’s veteran campaigner Yuzvendra Chahal has 13. I would have clean bowled Bavumath over but was hit for 23 in the 16th. The wrist-spinner was also treated harshly by the likes of David Miller and Klaasen in the latter overs as they came back with figures of 1/49.

Chahal had a remarkable season recently IPL 2022 where he won the Purple Cap with 23 wickets in his pocket. However, he has not been as effective in the ongoing series against South Africa. Meanwhile, the former India opener Gautam Gambhir Chahal’s approach in the game was questioned, stating that the 30-year-old did not change his pace and insisted on bowling tight.

Star. speaking on Play Network, the former India batsman felt that Chahal is an attacking bowler and he should bowl that way.

“It is very important to change your pace. If Chahal thinks ‘I will bowl tight and get wickets’ it will not happen. That is the job of a left arm spinner. A finger spinner is your defensive bowler but a wrist spinner. The spinner is your attacking option. He (Chahal) needs to have an aggressive mindset. He can give 50 runs in four overs. But if he takes three wickets, he can take the team to a position from where he is. Can win the match. But if he gives 40-50 runs and takes just one wicket, it is a problem,” Gambhir told Star Sports after the game.

“He has to bowl slow and woo the batsman. It doesn’t matter if he hits one or two sixes. In the second T20I, none of the SA batsmen tried to get out against Chahal. He was hitting the leg-spinner in the crease, which means he (Chahal) was trying to bowl fast. We expect this kind of delivery from Akshar, not Chahal,” he added.

Notably, Chahal has been quite expensive in the first two matches against South Africa. In Delhi, he bowled 2.1 overs in which he conceded 26 runs without a wicket. He has given 75 runs in 6.1 overs in 2 matches so far.
