Talking about her opponent, Savita said, “Even though as a team, we will focus on our performances, England and India have faced some very close encounters and undoubtedly in the last three-four years. One rivalry in particular has developed.”

“Some of our players want to challenge our goalkeeper, Maddie Hing, who has been exceptional at the goalpost. And they also have some very experienced players like Laura Unsworth, Gisele Ainsley, their captain Holly Pierne-Webb and Lily Owsley who will bring their ‘A’ game against us,” said Savita.

Even though India and England were supposed to play a double-header game in the FIH Hockey Pro League earlier this year, which would have provided an insight into their game, the match was cancelled. But India remains optimistic about its prospects in the prestigious World Cup here. “Yes, a match against him before the World Cup would have been ideal, but we couldn’t be more upset with what has happened in the past,” he said. Right now the only target for us is to start well in the tournament and the team is 100 per cent ready.

The Indian team will take on England on July 3 in the first match of their campaign in Pool B. In his second match, he will play China on 5 July followed by a match against New Zealand on 7 July at Amstelveen, New Zealand. Savita urged Indian fans to support her in her campaign for her maiden World Cup medal. “There is a large Indian community in the Netherlands and we are hoping that many of them will come for the match. We have seen many of them support us in Rotterdam during Pro League matches and of course the support of the fans will motivate us even more,” she concluded.
