‘We are not enemies’: Fadnavis on possible renewal of ties between BJP and Shiv Sena

Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said his party and former ally Shiv Sena are “not enemies” though they differ on some issues and said there are no “ifs and buts” in politics.

Asked whether there is a possibility of the two former colleagues coming together again, Fadnavis said an “appropriate decision” would be taken depending on the situation. When asked about his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the possibility of BJP and Shiv Sena coming together again, Fadnavis said, “There is no if and but in politics. Decisions would have been taken according to the prevailing circumstances. Huh.”

He was addressing a press conference on the eve of the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. “BJP and Shiv Sena are not enemies, though there are differences. Appropriate decision will be taken as per the situation,” the former chief minister said.

Fadnavis said, “Our friend (read Shiv Sena) fought the 2019 assembly elections with us. But after the elections, they (Shiv Sena) joined hands with the same people (NCP and Congress) against whom we contested.” Notably, the Shiv Sena and the BJP fell after the election over the issue of the chief minister’s post, which was claimed by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party. The Shiv Sena later joined hands with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government with Thackeray as the chief minister. Similarly, Fadnavis said that the central investigative agencies are probing various cases in Maharashtra on the orders of the High Court and there is no political pressure on them.

Fadnavis’s statement comes against the backdrop of separate meetings of Shiv Sena President and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Delhi last month, when he led a delegation of state ministers. Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut tried to dispel “rumours” about his meeting with BJP leader Ashish Shelar on Saturday.

“The more such rumours spread, the stronger the MVA alliance will be. We may have political and ideological differences, but if we come face-to-face in public gatherings, we will greet each other. I told Shelar. Have openly drank coffee together,” the chief spokesperson of the Shiv Sena had said. Meanwhile, Fadnavis expressed his displeasure over the uncertainty of a MPSC candidate’s final interview in Pune before getting a government job.

“Due to the apathetic attitude of MPSC, no member has been appointed and examinations and interviews are not being held,” he said and demanded changes in the State Public Service Commission.
