Watch: Western Railway starts 15 coach trains between Andheri and Virar in Mumbai

With an aim to increase passenger carrying capacity, Western Railway (WR) will start 15-car services on Mumbai Suburban slow lines between Andheri and Virar from Monday, June 28. WR said that 25 services including 13 DN and 12 UP services will be started. Converted from 12-car to 15-car services. Of these, 18 services will be on slow line, while 7 will be on fast.

“The expansion of twenty-five 12-car services into 15 car services is a huge boon for commuters, as it will increase the carrying capacity of these services by 25%. The hike will provide additional accommodation to the passengers for their convenience and comfort. In a release issued by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, it will be a big relief for the passengers when the services are opened for all.

In a tweet, WR said: “Crossing another milestone, WR has converted twenty-five 12-car services between Andheri and Virar into 15-car 15-car services on slow lines with effect from June 28, 2021. This will increase the carrying capacity of these services by 25%, thereby providing more convenience to the passengers.”

The project for expansion of 27 platforms at 14 stations on the slow corridor between Andheri and Virar to run 15 car services has been executed at an estimated cost of approx. 60 crores, it said. Alok Kansal, General Manager, Western Railway, closely monitored the project and its progress, motivated and guided Mumbai Division for timely completion.

According to Western Railway, the present achievement has been made possible by massive work of infrastructure development at 14 stations of about 40 km between Andheri and Virar, mainly consisting of 27 platforms to accommodate 15-car rakes. The expansion includes four major yard remodeling. Yards i.e. Andheri, Bhayandar, Vasai Road and Virar, construction/expansion of 5 FOBs and provision of double discharge at Jogeshwari for smooth movement of passengers etc.
