New Delhi: New York’s Aurther Ashe Stadium rocked with Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic winning the 24th Grand Slam title after he defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 US Open final.
The face-off between the two star players was a thrilling match that the Siberian Tennis star won. However, he also won the hearts of fans of late Kobe Bryant who tragically died in 2020. Djokovic paid a beautiful tribute to his close friend Bryant.
With Sunday’s victory, Djokovic now becomes the oldest Grand Slam singles champion in the Open Era. Before presenting the trophy, Djokovic paid tribute to Bryant.
The Serbian player wore a T-shirt with an image of the LA Lakers legend and the message “Mamba Forever” written on it. Djokovic also tied Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles titles in history.
The first set saw Djokovic take an early lead at 6-3. Despite the double fault, in the first match, Djokovic remained calm and preserved the set. This victory set the tone for the rest of the match, as Djokovic boasted a remarkable 72-1 record at the US Open when winning the first set.
In the second set, the match became more tense. Both players were forced to participate in long rallies, pushing their physical limits. However, Djokovic’s serve-and-volley strategy proved effective, helping him win the set 7-6(5).
Medvedev had a chance to equalize the match with the set score, but unfortunately fell behind after two sets. The third set was the decisive moment of the match. Djokovic, just a short distance from his 24th Grand Slam title, played with determination and precision.
Despite Medvedev’s best efforts, Djokovic still maintained the set 6-3, sealing victory in the 2023 US Open final. Djokovic ended the match after 3 hours and 16 minutes to win his 24th Grand Slam title.
This victory is more than just a title for Djokovic. It was her fourth victory in 10 finals at Flushing Meadows and equaled Margaret Court’s Grand Slam record.
Furthermore, it caps another remarkable Grand Slam campaign for Djokovic, who also won the Australian, French and US Opens in 2023.
