A pod hotel consists of several small bed-sized capsules and offers affordable overnight accommodations. The first pod hotel of the Indian Railways was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Union Minister of State for Railways, Raosaheb Danve from Churchgate station in South Mumbai. The Minister also inaugurated various passenger amenities through video link.

Speaking at the event, Danve said that travelers will find accommodation at affordable rates at Pod Hotels, also known as Capsule Hotels. The minister said that many passengers coming to Mumbai from other states either return on the same day or stay overnight.

However, for many of them, hotels and accommodation facilities are not available in the city.

“For such passengers, Western Railway has implemented the Pod Hotel concept in Mumbai Central, which will provide them accommodation for Rs 999 per day. A person can easily come and stay there and leave the next day.” He added that the pod hotel is air-conditioned and equipped with all facilities.

WR General Manager Alok Kansal said the total cost of the projects and facilities inaugurated on Wednesday was Rs 230 crore. He said that the Pod Concept Hotel at Mumbai Central Station is the first of its kind on Indian Railways.

Restaurant on Wheels to be soon in Nagpur, Manmad and Pune

The Restaurant on Wheels can accommodate up to 40 patrons inside the coach with 10 tables.

According to him, Railways has also introduced ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ facility at CSMT to provide better food facilities at the railway station as part of efforts to provide better facilities to the passengers without any hike in ticket fares.

Danve said there are plans to set up more such ‘restaurants on wheels’ at stations like Nagpur, Manmad and Pune. He also inaugurated the Railway Public Grievance Office at Churchgate station.

“Confirmed seats are not available for passengers traveling in general coaches of trains. Railways should ensure that passengers are provided with confirmed seats.”

More projects for Mumbai Suburban Network

On the occasion, Danve dedicated people’s platforms at Ambernath and Kopar railway stations on the Mumbai suburban network, foot overbridges, escalators, lifts and toilet blocks. He also inaugurated a coach-themed restaurant at CSMT and an executive waiting room at CSMT and Mumbai Central railway stations.

A renovated road over bridge near Grant Road station, an integrated monitoring system on the Mumbai suburban section of Western Railway was also inaugurated.

Highlighting that passenger trains in India run at a speed of 75-80 kmph, while goods trains run at just 25 kmph, Danve said that recently they have taken steps to expedite land acquisition. For this, a meeting was held with the district administration of Raigad and Palghar districts. Process for Dedicated Freight Corridor, which will increase the speed of freight movement.

He said that except Assam, North East Indian states are not connected by railway network and that is why about Rs 1 lakh crore is being spent to connect the region with the rest of the country through rail network.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Danve criticized the Maharashtra government, saying it has neither signed an agreement for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project nor has it paid the agreed funds for the project. Besides, the central government decided to pay money for 14 bridges to avoid cost escalation of the projects as the state government has not paid the money, he said.

Elevated Corridor between Churchgate and Virar

Speaking on the occasion, opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis urged Danve to revive the proposed elevated corridor projects to increase the carrying capacity on the Mumbai suburban corridors.

Railway officials had planned an elevated corridor between Churchgate and Virar stations on the Western Railway and CSMT-Panvel stations on the Central Railway.

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, who attended the inauguration ceremony, suggested the construction of malls at stations like Dadar, Sion, Kurla and Churchgate so that travelers can shop while returning home.
