WATCH: Daryl Mitchell hits a six and ball in Spectators Beer Cup, New Zealand offer replacement

It will surely go down as a cricket hole in one. New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell inadvertently created perhaps the most hilarious moment during a Test match in recent memory, when he smashed England spinner Jack Leach for a six to direct the ball straight into the beer pint of an innocent bystander.

A strange turn of events unfolded during the 56th over of New Zealand’s innings on the first day of the second Test at Trent Bridge. Mitchell was turning up the heat as he shifted gears and proceeded to launch one off Leach for a clean hit at long-on. A spectator, later identified as Susan, was enjoying a beer in the stands, when the ball surprisingly landed in her beer cup and spilled the drink on people sitting around.

While the others laughed, Susan was clearly not happy. England fast bowler Matthew Potts, who had to retrieve the ball, tried to explain to his teammates what happened to the ball.

The ball drenched in beer had to be dried before the start of the game.

However, in a scintillating gesture, the New Zealand team handed Susan a pint in lieu of a splash drink. Later, criminal Michelle posed with him after the day’s play was over.

Meanwhile, the day belonged to the New Zealand batsmen as they were put to bat first by England captain Ben Stokes. Stand-in captain Tom Latham and Will Young got off to a solid start adding 84 runs before parting ways with the opening pair.

England reduced New Zealand from 84/0 to 84/2 and then from 161/2 to 169/4. However, Mitchell (81*) and Tom Blundell (67*) did no more damage at the stumps to take their team to 318/4 in 87 overs.

James Anderson and Ben Stokes took two wickets each.
