WATCH: Cameron Boyce creates BBL history by claiming double hat-trick

Australia’s legspinner Cameron Boyce created history in the Big Bash League (BBL) by taking a double hat-trick for the first time in the tournament. Boyce, who played for the Melbourne Renegades against Sydney Thunder at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), also became the 10th bowler to take four wickets in four balls in T20 cricket.

Boyce’s astonishing effort spanned two overs of Thunder’s innings and it began with the final delivery of the seventh over when he dismissed Thunder opener Alex Hales, who took Loft to long-off.

Returning to bowl in the ninth over, Boyce deceives Jason Union with a flight on the first ball as the right-hander is stumped while dancing on the pitch to hit the leggie for the big shot.

On the very next ball, Alex Ross tried to play a reverse sweep and after completing Boyce’s hat-trick, went lbw in front of the stumps. The double hat-trick was completed quickly as Daniel Sams played Boyce’s ball around and was in front of the leg-stump, enough for the umpire to point his finger at Boyce’s side, completing the double hat-trick.

Boyce’s four consecutive wickets meant the Thunder fell from 80/0 to 85/4 in 8.3 overs. “We still can’t believe this happened!! A double hattie from Cameron Boyce!!” BBL tweeted.

Boyce, who took eight wickets in seven T20Is for Australia, then completed his five-wicket haul as Matthew Gilkes took a catch in the 11th over to finish with figures of 5/15 in three overs. Six overs later, Boyce joined hands on Usman Khawaja’s on-drive to run out Ben Cutting from the non-striker’s end.

Boyce’s ‘player of the match’ efforts, 32, were not enough to give the Renegades a win in their last match of this edition as he was dismissed off the last ball when the Thunder needed two runs to give a one-off win. Run.

The one-run loss also meant that Melbourne Renegades scored a hat-trick to be at the bottom of the BBL points table (2019, 2020 and 2021).
