Watch: Babar Azam awkwardly wears wicketkeeper’s gloves to field a ball; Pakistan ends with a five-run fine

During the second ODI against West Indies on Friday, Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s cheeky style had to give his team five penalty runs. While fielding, Babar wore a wicketkeeper’s glove in one hand which was illegal as per the law.

A strange incident happened during West Indies’ unsuccessful chase of 276 in Multan Cricket Stadium. During the 29th over, bowled by spinner Mohammad Nawaz, Alzarri Joseph defended the first ball and the ball was headed towards the square leg area and Babar was wearing a glove in his right hand when he caught the ball and the umpire called it. Considered illegal fielding.

What does the law say?

As per Law 28.1 on Protective Equipment: No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or outside leg guards. In addition, hand or finger protection may be worn only with the consent of the umpires.

Well, Pakistan didn’t cost much of the penalty runs as West Indies scored 155 in 32.2 overs to wrap up the three-match series with a massive 120-run victory for the hosts.

Babar, however, was once let off with a smile when he realized that Pakistan had paid the price for his actions. However, in the larger context, he must have been overjoyed with the way his team took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

“The wicket was double speed initially,” Babar said during the post-match presentation. “We wanted to build a partnership because we knew it would be tough for the new batsmen. Unfortunately there was a run out. We were 10-15 runs short because of me.

West Indies were in a solid position during their chase of 71/1 when Mohammad Nawaz took four wickets.

“I was confident that our spinners would bowl well. Nawaz was excellent, he picked up wickets at crucial moments,” Babar said.
