Warm-up competition ends in a draw

Indian vs County Selection XI: England opener Haseeb Hameed scored a struggling century to help County Select XI reach 220/9 on the second day of the warm-up match against the touring Indian Test team.

Right-handed Hameed scored 112 off 246 balls and took his side to a respectable score after being reduced to 56/4 at one point.

Hameed, who was selected in England’s squad for the first two Tests against India the following month, put on 75 runs for the fifth wicket with Lyndon James (27). The 24-year-old, the seventh man to be dismissed, hit 13 fours in his innings.

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav (3/22) in 15 overs was the most successful bowler for the Indians. Other pacers Jasprit Bumrah (1/29 in 15 overs) and Mohammad Siraj (2/32 in 13 overs) also worked well. The trio had reduced the home team to 44/3 in 21 overs at lunch to take the initiative.

Siraj had picked up the wicket of India’s Test teammate and all-rounder Washington Sundar in the first session, who fell for one in seven balls.

Sundar and Avesh Khan, who have been ruled out of the warm-up match after injuring their thumbs on day one, are representing the County Selection XI after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was unable to field a playing XI. Covid-19 and injuries.

Earlier, the Indians, which resumed on 306/9, lasted only three more overs as the visitors scored 311 runs in the first essay. Craig Miles took Bumrah’s last wicket with four wickets for 45 runs.
