VVS Laxman ready to take over as NCA chief, accepted BCCI’s offer: Report

Former India batting legend VVS Laxman has accepted BCCI’s offer to take over as the National Director of Cricket. Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. According to ESPNcricinfo, he has informed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) about his decision to step down as the team’s mentor following the development.

Laxman has been at the forefront to occupy the position vacated by former India captain Rahul Dravid, who is about to begin his tenure as the national men’s team’s head coach with the start of the home series against New Zealand. However, there is no official confirmation from the Indian Cricket Board yet.

Laxman has been a key figure in the commentary box and has also dug into the Indian Premier League at SRH. Prior to this, he has also served as a batting consultant in the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for six years; A role that was facilitated by current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who was the CAB’s joint secretary in 2014.

And now, as reports say, Laxman will take over an influential position in the Indian cricket setup, with Ganguly at the fore. At the NCA, the former will oversee the education and skill-based programs not only for the players but also for the former players who aspire to become coaches.

The 47-year-old will also be assisted by a coaching staff – batting, bowling and fielding. It is learned that the BCCI has conducted interviews for these vacant posts and is yet to announce the names.

Earlier on Monday, former India cricketer Sairaj Bahule was appointed as the bowling coach for the India A team’s tour of South Africa starting later this month. Saurashtra great Sitanshu Kotak will be the head coach while former Assam cricketer Subhadeep Ghosh will be the fielding coach for the tour.
