Vadodara: For decades, they were neglected and often littered with garbage. But this year on Diwali, the ghats of Vishwamitri river were lit up with hundreds of diyas. A group of Barodis came together and illuminated the ghats near Kala Ghoda circle on November 4.
Ghats which were once a popular place among the residents of Baroda state were lit with diyas during the Gaekwadi era. “Over time, we have forgotten our heritage and the importance of such sites. Hence, we have decided to celebrate Diwali at these ghats this year,” said Vishal Thakur, who has been organizing programs to spread awareness about the Vishwamitri river.
Thakur, Sanjay Soni and some other citizens together cleaned the ghats on the eve of Diwali. “We removed all the garbage and cleaned the ghats in dilapidated condition. On Diwali, we drew Rangoli After this the ghats were illuminated with lamps. It was a mesmerizing experience as Vishwamitri Ghats resembled the ghats of Ayodhya,” Thakur told TOI.
“Many citizens came for the program and we discussed how to revive the river and restore the ghats. With such events we can involve more citizens and revive the river which has so much historical significance for us,” Thakur said. The group has been organizing and working on several programs to save hundreds of crocodiles living not only in the river but also in Vishwamitri.
