‘Vishwaguru’s fresh salute’: Are demonstrations now banned in Parliament?

New Delhi: Media reports have claimed that the Parliament Secretariat has passed an order banning protests and demonstrations inside the Parliament premises. The order has caused quite a stir among the members of the House who are calling the ruling NDA government dictatorial and accusing them of killing the spirit of democracy. Veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who is clearly annoyed by the new order, shared a copy of the circular on his Twitter account. Taking a candid dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom the opposition often addresses as a ‘tyrant’ or ‘tyrant’, Ramesh slammed Vishguru’s latest salvo – “D(h)arna mana hai!” tweeted to. This comes just a day after the Secretariat released a list of words that will be treated as unparliamentary.

Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar said that the opposition got the Speaker’s statement and added that there is no restriction on demonstration or protest inside the Parliament premises.

Opposition furious over word ban in Parliament

The Congress and the Trinamool Congress on Thursday criticized the “gag order” over the use of certain words in Parliament, saying all words used by the opposition to describe the Modi government will now be treated as “unparliamentary”.

According to a new booklet by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the use of words like ‘jumlajeevi’, ‘child wit’, ‘Covid spreader’ and ‘snoopgate’ and even ’embarrassment’, ‘abuse’, ‘betrayal’, corrupt’ , ‘drama’, ‘hypocrisy’ and ‘incompetent’ will henceforth be treated as unparliamentary in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Criticizing the move, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “All the words used by the opposition to describe the reality of the Modi government will now be treated as ‘unparliamentary’. What next, Vishguru.”

Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala also said, “Saheb knows his qualities very well.” He also shared a copy of the news report.

The Congress tweeted in Hindi and said, ‘Jumlajeevi se’ who will be afraid – who gave the jumla. Who will be afraid of the word ‘Jaichand’ – who has betrayed the country. These words are not being banned in Parliament. Fear of PM Modi is coming out.”

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien said, “Session starts in a few days. Gag orders issued on MPs.”
