‘Virat will be gated’: Dale Steyn disappointed by India’s loss to New Zealand

Another Sunday, another one-sided match. India came to play New Zealand last Sunday, 7 days after their dismal performance against Pakistan but it looked like the team never really came. India, who never beat New Zealand in a World Cup game, faced yet another embarrassment. He scored just 110 runs in his 20 overs and lost the match by 8 wickets.

Virat Kohli, who is playing his last tournament as captain in the shortest format, is in a lot of controversies these days. His former Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Dale Steyn feels that the Indian captain will suffer after this defeat.

Speaking on Star Sports, Steyn said that he feels bad for India as they have lost a game which they had to win.

“Virat Kohli will be disappointed, losing a game he had to win tonight while New Zealand will be happy. I feel bad for India,” Dale Steyn told Star Sports.

Virat said in the post-match presentation that he was not brave enough with bat or ball. Many experts also gave the same opinion.

The team failed to show any positive intent in the game. From the very beginning when India lost the toss and were called to bat, the batsmen were very cautious. Perhaps the impact of the collapse at the top was on the mind of Indian openers KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan, who came back with India at 35 for 2 in 5.5 overs.

The team could not recover due to the fall of wickets and India ended on a disappointing score of 110 runs. New Zealand chased down the target with ease, thanks to Daryl Mitchell’s quick knock of 49 runs off 35 balls and captain Kane Williamson’s 33 runs. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, who took 2 wickets, the Indian bowlers could not create any chance for India to enter the game.

The most practical qualifying scenario for India is to win all their games by huge margins to maintain net run rates above Afghanistan and New Zealand. At the same time, they have to depend on Afghanistan to beat New Zealand.

India will next face Afghanistan on 3 November. Of course, the victory match will start at 7:30 pm.
