Virat Kohli can focus on his family and batting after relinquishing captaincy: Dale Steyn

Former South African pacer Dale Steyn has claimed that Virat Kohli can focus more on his young family and batting after stepping down as the Indian captain. Steyn, who played alongside Kohli in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore, feels that relinquishing the captaincy will free him and he may soon finish his century.

Over the years, Kohli’s batting form declined slightly as he failed to score a century in international cricket since 2019. The 33-year-old relinquished his T20I captaincy after the 2021 World Cup last year while the selectors took the decision. Leave him as the captain in ODIs as well as they wanted only one captain in the limited overs format. Whereas recently, Kohli stepped down as Test captain even after India lost the three-match Test series to South Africa.

Steyn made an interesting point and said that the bio-bubble makes life a bit difficult for any captain.

“I think the bubble life can make it really difficult. You take on so much responsibility as a captain, then you’ve got your family and you’re traveling, it’s really up to the family at the end of the day.” It boils down to. I personally think so,” Steyn told Star Sports on Wednesday.

The Proteas pace legend further talks about Kohli having a young family and now after relinquishing the captaincy, he can focus more on him with his batting which has waned a bit over the years.

“He has a young family right now, captaincy. Have to be focused. Best for the country. But as soon as a young family comes, few other things don’t matter much.”

“Now I feel, with Virat Kohli giving up the captaincy, he can focus on his family and then focus on his batting. You might even see a better Virat Kohli now. For most of his career, he was a single man, he was the captain, he didn’t have to worry about stuff like that but now a lot of new things have come up in the game.”

Steyn backed Kohli to return to his best form and predicted that his century drought could end in the first ODI against South Africa where he would play without the responsibility of captaincy after almost 7 years.

“I think it will set him free and we will probably see that he hasn’t scored an international century in 2 years. Maybe today is his first match as a non-captain,” Steyn said. .
