Violence in UP Panchayat elections brought back memories of SP rule: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has expressed concern over the violence in the UP Panchayat elections in the state. After the election of the district panchayat president, many incidents have come to the fore during the nomination in the block head nomination. On which BSP chief Mayawati has said that such incidents in the BJP government bring back memories of SP rule and has also said that this is the reason why her party was not participating in these elections.

The former CM of the state has alleged gross misuse of power and money by the BJP during the election of district panchayat president and block chief nominations. In a series of tweets on Friday morning, the BSP chief said, “The gross misuse of power and money and violence by the BJP during the election of Zilla Panchayat President and now Block Pramukh, brings back many such memories of SP rule. That’s why the BSP has decided not to contest both these indirect elections.”

“Now that the UP assembly elections are near, the SP is showing verbal protest and aggression against the BJP government. This is grossly delusional and unbelievable, as the longing for power and winning elections at all costs under Samajwadi Party rule is still fresh in people’s mind.

He further wrote, ‘At the same time, the SP, who has the attitude of ‘Hallabol’, talks about the rights of the poor, farmers and unemployed etc. Why is it inactive? That’s something to think about too.”

Earlier on Thursday, Uttar Pradesh witnessed widespread violence, including firing, in at least 12 districts on the day of filing of nominations for the Block Pramukh (Mukhya) election. However, police said there were relatively fewer violent incidents this time as compared to the previous block main elections. But such incidents were witnessed in districts like Jhansi, Sitapur, Bijnor, Etawah, Kannauj and Bulandshahr where firing, clashes and vandalism prevailed on the day of nomination.

ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said cases of malpractice have been reported during the enrollment process in 14 districts across the state. Kumar said that four people have been arrested in Sitapur, where one person was seriously injured. However, he said the violence was less as compared to the previous block main elections. But he assured that strict action would be taken against all the culprits including irresponsible police officers.

During the nomination process in Sitapur district, two groups opened fire and also threw bombs at each other. In Unnao, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Lalitpur, Kanpur Rural, Ambedkar Nagar and Azamgarh, the police got a double whammy on the careless locals. Former assembly speaker Mataprasad Pandey was assaulted and the glass of his vehicle was also damaged by the miscreants. In Lakhimpur, the proposer of a female candidate was assaulted and her sari was pulled during the incident.
