Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials probing cases of post-poll violence in West Bengal on Saturday questioned two Trinamool Congress MLAs who are considered close to party strongman Anubrata Mondal.
The two ruling party MLAs who were questioned were Abhijit Sinha and Sheikh Sahonavez from Labpur and Ketugram assembly constituencies respectively.
According to CBI sources, the two MLAs were expected to give important clues about Mandal’s involvement in cases of post-poll violence in Birbhum district, especially in the case related to the murder of a local BJP worker, soon after the results came out. . The 2021 assembly elections were announced.
“We are interrogating all those with whom Anubrata Mondal spoke on the phone on the day of the murder. From the call-list of Mandal’s mobile number that day, we got the records of his conversations with these two MLAs. So we summoned him to get details about that conversation,” said a CBI official on condition of anonymity.
It is learned that the CBI officials interrogated Sinha and Sahonavez separately.
Talking to media persons after interrogation, Sinha said that it was natural for Mandal to talk to him as Mandal is the party’s Birbhum district president.
Shonvez, on the other hand, said that he answered all the questions that the CBI officials asked him and assured full cooperation to the CBI officials in the investigation process.
“Yes, I had called him (Mandal) on the day assembly election results were announced to inform him about my victory,” said Shonvez.
On June 2, Mandal was questioned by CBI officials for over four hours in connection with the agency’s probe into the post-poll violence cases.
A day before the questioning, CBI officials also conducted a search operation at the residence of Mandal’s personal bodyguard Sehgal Hussain in Murshidabad district.
Apart from the post-poll violence case, Mandal is also under the CBI’s scanner in the agency’s ongoing probe into cattle and coal smuggling cases.
